Indigenous Veterans Day & Remembrance Day

Let us pause to honour Indigenous Veterans Day (Nov 8) and Remembrance Day (Nov 11), recognizing the courage, sacrifices, and dedication of all those who have served in the armed forces, past and present. Indigenous veterans have a long and proud history in Canada’s military, often serving on the front lines even in times when they were denied the very rights and freedoms they defended. Despite facing systemic barriers, discrimination, and challenges during and after their service, Indigenous veterans stepped forward with bravery and resilience, standing shoulder to shoulder with their fellow soldiers.
So, we gently ask that as you reflect on Remembrance Day, and on the countless veterans who fought so bravely for our freedom and the freedom of others, take a moment to consider who received that freedom, who didn’t, and who is still fighting for it. Let us remember the stories of Indigenous veterans whose contributions and sacrifices have often gone unrecognized and whose communities continue to seek justice and equality today.
On November 8, let us acknowledge the invaluable service of Indigenous veterans specifically, and on November 11, may we all take a moment to remember all veterans who have dedicated their lives to peace and freedom. May we honour their legacies by working towards a world where the freedoms they fought for extend to all.
Lest we forget.
