Code of Conduct
2024/2025
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Galiano School strives to create a respectful and inclusive environment for all members of our school community. Our school is a partnership of students, staff, parents and community members. Together, we are dedicated to nurturing the joy of learning. We foster the development of intellectual, social, emotional, physical and artistic aspects of growth. The developmental nature of learning is valued and supported through our educational practice. As a community, we are committed to providing an environment that helps us to reach our goal.
The purpose of our code of conduct is:
- to establish and maintain a safe, caring, and orderly environment that is conducive to intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth and development
- to identify, teach, model, and support expected behaviours while at school and at school-sponsored functions and activities in the community
- to foster respect, fairness, inclusion and equity
- to provide the framework to develop increasing personal and social responsibility self-regulation/self-discipline and co-regulation.
EXPECTATIONS FOR BEHAVIOR
Acceptable Conduct
Galiano Community School promotes the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code, respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law-prohibiting discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and age - in respect of discriminatory publication and discrimination in accommodation, service and facility in the school environment.
Our Code of Conduct is based on the Galiano Community School Bill of Rights and Responsibilities and is taught through our Positive Behaviour Support, known as SOLE. The four tenets of SOLE at Galiano Community School are:
- Respect and Care for Self
- Respect and Care for Others
- Respect and Care for Learning
- Respect and Care for the Environment
SOLE outlines the framework for expected behaviours to support students to interact and engage with oneself, others and the environment in an appropriate, meaningful and respectful manner. SOLE is regularly discussed and assessed to ensure that all members of the school community are familiar with the language and expectations so that everyone is able to make informed and appropriate choices in the way each individual conducts themselves at school and at school functions and activities in the community. The examples below do not represent an exhaustive list.

Consequences
At Galiano Community School, we consider the severity and frequency of unacceptable conduct, the impact on others, as well as the age, maturity and developmental level of the offender in determining the appropriate disciplinary action. Special considerations may apply to students with special needs if these students are unable to comply with the Code of Conduct due to having a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural nature. Our staff will ensure:
- responses to unacceptable conduct are consistent and fair
- wherever possible, disciplinary action is preventative and restorative rather than merely punitive
- as often as possible, students are encouraged to participate in the development of meaningful consequences for violations of the established code of conduct
- that reasonable steps will be taken to prevent retaliation against students who inform staff of another student(s)’ breach of the Code of Conduct
Unexpected Behaviours may have the following response:
For Mild Behaviours (not cleaning after oneself, hurtful comments)
- review expectations and redirection of behaviour
- create conversation between affected students to address the conflict and learn from it
- guide and support student to fix mistake/incident
For Moderate Behaviours (swearing, breach of privacy):
- a response/fix is created that establishes accountability, repairs the harm, restores the relationship and are logically connected to the behaviour by a staff member of member of the team
- behaviour will be documented
- parents/guardians will be informed when behaviour concerns become more frequent or escalate
For Severe Behaviours (an activity that has a harmful effect on or jeopardizes the safety and or well-being of others)
