Code of Conduct
Purpose:
Aligned with our shared school values of Learning, Community and Creativity, the purpose of our Code of Conduct is:
To establish and maintain safe, caring and orderly environments for purposeful learning activity
To establish and maintain appropriate balances among individual and collective rights, freedoms and responsibilities
To clarify and publish expectations for student behaviour while at school, at school-related activities or in other circumstances where engaging in an activity will have an impact on the school environment. This includes online activities.
Acceptable Student Conduct:
Being respectful towards self and others
Helping to make the school a safe, caring and orderly place
Informing adults about safety concerns in a timely manner, proactively if possible
Engaging in learning activities purposefully and in a timely manner
Acting in a manner that brings credit to the school
Unacceptable Student Conduct:
Behaviours that interfere with the learning of others, including their emotional well-being
Behaviours that interfere with an orderly environment, or create unsafe conditions
Acts of discrimination on any basis for an individual or a group, related to their Indigenous identity, race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age of that person, group or class of persons
Acts of bullying, defamation, harassment, intimidation, or physical violence
Illegal acts, such as possession, use or distribution of illegal or restricted substances, possession of weapons, physical or sexual assault, theft or damage to property
Retribution against a person who has intervened to prevent or report an incident or other safety concern
Personal Digital Devices:
The use of personal digital devices is limited at school, for the purpose of promoting online safety and focused learning environments
Generally, devices are to be stored away during instructional time, with notifications and sounds set to 'off'
Staff may allow students to use personal devices for specific instructional or learning support tasks
Students are not required to have a personal digital device for learning
Consequences for Unacceptable Student Conduct:
Responses to unacceptable conduct will be appropriate and equitable
Disciplinary action, wherever possible, is preventative and restorative, rather than punitive
Students, as often as possible, are encouraged to participate in the development of meaningful consequences for violations of the established Code of Conduct
Considerations:
Behaviours (both Acceptable and Unacceptable) cited in the Code of Conduct are examples only and not an all-inclusive list
As students become older, more mature, and move through successive grades, there is an expectation of increasing personal responsibility and self-discipline. Accordingly, there are increased consequences for inappropriate conduct/ unacceptable behaviour
Special considerations may apply if a student is unable to comply with the expectations due to having a disability or diverse ability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional, or behavioural nature
Notification of Violations of the Code of Conduct will be as follows:
Parents/guardians of students involved
School staff members where appropriate
School District officials, as required by school district policy
RCMP and other agencies, as required by school district policy and/or by law
All parents, staff, and students, when deemed to be important to reassure all members of the school community that school officials are aware of a serious situation or incident and are taking appropriate action to address it
