Spotlight64: 'Discover Trades' Event Inspires During Career Awareness Month

In celebration of Career Awareness Month in Canada, grade eight students from across the district came together on Thursday, November 14th, for a fantastic Discover Trades Event in the TASK compound at the 香港六合彩 Learning Hub.
The event was a rewarding collaboration between Camosun College and the Masonry Institute of BC. SD#64’s Ryan Buchanan organized an engaging carpentry session where students built chicken runs. The Camosun Piping Trailer offered exciting hands-on activities, including learning to solder copper pipes and bending metal to make cell phone holders. The Masonry Institute set up stations for students to construct brick walls with mortar and trowels. Every student had the chance to participate in each of these fun activities.
The day was filled with inspiring opportunities for deep, hands-on learning; the weather was perfect, and the pizza lunch was a huge hit with all the students.
Here are some reflections from the students:
“I learned many fun things that I did not know how to do.”
“The things we tried are definitely not what I want to do when I am older, but it was fun to try.”
“It was important because it teaches us how to work with materials and helps us decide what to do when we are older.”
“It was cool and could help with future work decisions.”
A big shout-out to all the REAL Eight teachers and EAs who chaperoned their students, Ryan Buchanan’s Engineering class who served as “near peer mentors,” and the GISS Admin for their support. The event was a resounding success, and we received fantastic recommendations from the students about what they would like to explore next.
