Unofficial Summary of the Public Board Meeting, held January 29, 2025
The Board
LCC Request | The Board agreed to send up to three trustees to meet with the Salt Spring Local Community Commission to discuss shared priorities and responsibilities (date to be determined).
GITA Local Bargaining Agreement | The Board approved the local matters agreement with Gulf Island Teachers’ Association that was signed in December 2024.
Committees | Changes to Standing Committee trustee appointments include trustee Pingle as chair of Finance, Audit, and Facilities and trustee Boulter added to the Education and Policy Committees. The Board adopted the Terms of Reference for the Finance Audit and Facilities Committee.
Superintendent’s Report
Student Achievement | The District received positive feedback from the Ministry regarding the September . The importance of student engagement, voice, and support, especially for Indigenous students was highlighted. remain outstanding for all students.
Communications Plan | The District has been updated to reflect new strategic plan commitments and beliefs. The Strategy identifies tactics for regular and consistent sharing of information and improving community engagement.
Indigenous Education | The District is working to identify local rights holders and establish the Indigenous Education Council in alignment with Bill 40. The work continues towards fostering relationships and exploring opportunities to enhance learning and uplift local language, history, and culture for all learners.
Financial Reports, Budget, and Capital Plans
Monthly Financial Report | The December operating expense report shows that, although spending remains consistent, expenses are slightly above annual budget levels by 1.6%.
Signing Authorities | The Board approved updates to the district signing authority to reflect the new threshold of $75,000 (increased from $10,000) and changes in signatories.
Program Review | The District will commence the next phase of the educational program review. The Board considered timelines for review and which programs to review in the next phase. French Immersion and TASK will be reviewed in spring 2025.
Amended Budget Process | The Ministry has announced the updated operating grant funding. A draft annual amended budget will be presented at the February 12th Audit, Finance and Facilities Committee Meeting for discussion.
