Board Meeting Highlights 

Unofficial Summary of the Public Board Meeting, held February 26, 2025


Delegation | Gulf Islands Secondary School Student Council members presented on the work they’ve accomplished, projects they are currently undertaking, and goals for the future. The council is hoping to increase student engagement and grade diversity of council members.

Board Review | The BCSTA is working to update evaluation modules for Boards of Education. The Board will undertake a self-evaluation this spring once the first modules become available. 


District Updates

Indigenous Education Council | The District is working with the W?SÁNE? School Board on a draft Terms of Reference for the Indigenous Education Council, expected to begin in September.

Strategic Direction | The Superintendent shared an overview of the work taking place across the District including literacy initiatives, professional development for teachers, compassionate systems awareness and leadership, and the integration of positive mental health in promoting student and adult well-being. Staffing and Projected Enrolment | Staffing processes are underway for the next school year. The District is projecting a slight decline in enrolment due to a large graduating class leaving this year and a comparatively smaller expected intake of Kindergarten students.


Finance and Facilities

Monthly Financial Report | The December operating expense report shows that, although spending remains consistent, expenses are slightly above annual budget levels by 1.54%. The amended budget addresses this discrepancy.

Amended Budget | The Board approved the  of $32,594,467.

Bus Registration | The annual bus registration window will open April 1 to April 30. Registrations received after that date will incur a $75 administration fee. Updated processes are outlined in Administrative Practice  Student Bus Transportation Eligibility and Registration. Once the registration window is open, a link to register for student bus service will be posted on the district website.


Policy Committee 

Adopted new Policy 3.30 Fee-Paying Students and repealed policy 5350 International Education

  • Approved amendments and renumbering of Policy 4.20 Student Physical Restrain and Seclusion in Emergency Circumstances, and repealed Procedure 402 Student Physical Restraint and Seclusion in favour of Physical Restraint and Seclusion in Emergency Circumstances
  • Amended definitions in Policy 4.30 Severe Allergic Reaction 
  • REPEALED outright:
    • Policy 600 Financial Practices (replaced by 5.10 and 5.11)  
    • Policy 615 Disposal of Equipment
    • Policy 6200 Purchasing and Tendering
    • Policy 6300 Retention /Destruction of Records
    • Policy 6480 School Petty Cash Fund
