Unofficial Summary of the Public Board Meeting, held May 14, 2025

The Board of Education

BCSTA AGM | Trustees and District staff attended the BCSTA AGM May 24-26 in Vancouver.

Board Meeting Schedule 2025-2026 | The Board approved the 2025-2026 Board Meetings Schedule. Regular Board meetings will take place at the school board office on Salt Spring Island and be broadcast for public viewing. Committee Day meetings will take place online. School visits are built into the schedule.

District Updates

Indigenous Education Council | The District is working to support the creation of Terms of Reference for the Indigenous Education Council following their meeting with local rights holders on April 17 at Khowutzun Heritage Centre. The second meeting will be held on May 23.

Strategic Direction | The Superintendent shared an overview of initiatives across the District, including developments in Feeding Futures, Inclusive Education and Mental Health. Superintendent Jensen expressed appreciation for the opportunity to witness Chief Eric Pelkey from the Tsawout First Nation gift a map of the territory to Pender Island Elemenary Secondary School.

Anti-Racism Review | Associate Superintendent Beardsmore offered the annual review of District efforts to dismantle racism and exclusionary practices as per Policy 2.30 Anti-Racism. The full report, which shares several anonymous reporting tools, can be accessed via the

Finances and Budget

Monthly Financial Report | The monthly operating expense report reveals that expenses are within 0.43% of the amended budget. Secretary Treasurer Guy delivered a of the 2025-2026 draft budget. The draft  received a first reading. Board will consider 2nd and 3rd readings, and adoption, at the June 11th meeting in public.

Policy Committee

Approved | Policy 5.61 Disposal of Land and Improvements was adopted and replaces Policy 616.

Notice of Motion | The following draft policies will be posted on the district website, circulated for feedback, and will be considered for adoption at the June 11, 2025, meeting of the board in public.

5.12 Annual Budget (Replaces Policies 605 and 606)

5.20 Student Fees and Financial Hardship (replaces Policies 6700 and 6750)

5.30 Reimbursement of Expenses (replaces Policy/Procedure 6500)

5.40 Donations and Gifts (replaces Policy/Procedure 6300)

5.60 School Closure (replaces Policy/Procedure 635)

The Policy Committee has recommended ceasing the accommodation allowance as it is currently provided. Draft policy 5.20 addresses financial hardship as a barrier to accessing educational programs and activities.
